Torre di Casallia, Tuscan Maremma
Medieval Tower · Tuscan Maremma · Since the Year 1000

A thousand years of stone,
to live in today.

Two independent apartments — or the whole tower — between Vetulonia and Castiglione della Pescaia, restored for the present without erasing anything of the past.

The history

A thousand years, one single stone

A Benedictine bell tower, an Aldobrandeschi castle, a home today: the tower's story in one telling, from the year 1000 to now.

From the Abbey of Sestinga to today

The origin of the name, the Sienese families who once held it, the restoration that brought it back to life.

The tower's fireplace

“Praise be to you, my Lord, through Brother Fire,
through whom you light the night,
and he is beautiful and merry, robust and strong.”

St. Francis of Assisi — Canticle of the Creatures

The verse that accompanies the tower's period fireplace, where a fire is still lit today.

The apartments

Two homes, one tower

Independent, on separate floors, each with its own story and its own name. Choose one, or rent the whole tower.

The restoration

Every stone has a name

The restoration was not meant to tell a new story: it was meant to let the existing one stay legible. The local stone facing, the marble of the arrow-slits, the brick vaults — every surface still carries its own origin.

In the stairwells, original carved stone elements resurfaced, like this stone mask, brought back to light and left exactly where it was found. Inside, period furniture and paintings coexist with fully contemporary systems: the comfort is today's. The soul has stayed the same.

Or, the whole tower

Ildebrando and Pia de' Tolomei can be booked together, as a single home across four floors: a rare experience for extended families or groups of friends who want the entire tower to themselves. One bathroom per floor keeps everyone's privacy even when the tower is full.

Surroundings

Between Vetulonia and the sea

From the tower's arrow-slits, the eye runs across the plain where ancient Etruscan Vetulonia once stood. The sea at Castiglione della Pescaia is minutes away; the Maremma countryside is best crossed slowly, as it has always been here.
